But, that's what this game was supposed to be, hard as hell, so complaining about that is kinda of pointless really. We're talking difficult to the point of not being entirely enjoyable. And the difficulty level gets to be rather insane on the last two levels. (Games such as Wendy Every Witch Way and VVVVVV took inspiration from this.) The best things I can say about Metal Storm is that it controls very well, constantly barrages the player with new ideas, and is damned hard. Metal Storm is a robot shooting game that revolves around one unique mechanic, the ability to reverse gravity and flip upside down whenever you want. Highly recommended for any fans of NES sidescrollers. I certainly do plan on playing it, however, and with the game's tight controls and thoughtful level design, I'm sure I'll have an even better time than I did on my first playthrough. Maybe it's different in the second loop, which is supposed to be harder, but I haven't played it yet so I'm not sure. It's not really tense or challenging when you can game over after any boss and pick right back up where you left off. I don't mind the "continuing from the halfway point of the level" thing too much, but a boss rush is usually included to test the player's mettle and bump the ending of the game up in terms of challenge and tension. The final stage is a boss rush, but you can take your sweet time with it, seeing as the game provides a checkpoint after each and every boss. That seems like a pretty generous and welcome feature, but the stages are so short to begin with that it ends up simplifying the game a bit too much. When you lose all of your lives, it continues you from the second half of the stage you died in, provided you reached the halfway point before death, of course.

Even the graphics and music are clear upgrades over Holy Diver.ĭespite all the good things I have to say about the game, I do have one small issue with it, and that is the difficulty. Perhaps best of all is the fact that the extremely aggravating control bug from Holy Diver is gone Metal Storm plays wonderfully. Every stage is designed around the gravity control mechanic, as were the bosses, which are all a lot of fun to analyze and then take down. In fact, Metal Storm's overall game design is far superior to Holy Diver's, even in spite of the decreased difficulty. As I mentioned before, Metal Storm is much easier than Irem's earlier platformer offering, fortunately without sacrificing the level design. This ability is really fun to play around with and easy to get the hang of, never feeling gimmicky or like an afterthought. The M-308 is also equipped with the ability to change gravity at will, which you will have to make heavy use of in order to clear the game.

In order to traverse various outer-planetary bases, the M-308 will have to run, jump, and shoot its way through hordes of opposing robots, but that's not all. In Metal Storm, you take control of a robot called the M-308 Gunner, and seeing as sidescrollers starring robots are usually among the best of the genre, (Mega Man, Cave Story) I already had a feeling this would be a solid game.

In contrast to Holy Diver's borderline sadistic difficulty, Metal Storm is actually pretty easy, at least for the first loop. After the hellish and famously challening Holy Diver, Irem has decided to dip their toes into platformer water once more with Metal Storm.
